Requirements for a Veteran with a Disability or their Surviving Spouse
- Served active duty in U.S. armed forces.
- Was honorably discharged.
- Has established a service-connected disability that has been rated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as a one hundred percent permanent disability through disability retirement benefits or has been granted individual unemployability status.
- The applicant or their spouse is the property owner of record as of January 1 in the year they apply.
- The applicant occupies the property as their primary residence, as of January 1 in the year they apply.
- Or, the applicant is the surviving spouse of a Veteran with a disability who received the veteran’s exemption before they passed away.
Basic Requirements for a Gold Star Spouse
- A Spouse of a United States armed service member who died in the line of duty or a veteran whose death resulted from a service-related injury or disease.
- The Spouse has been awarded Gold Star Status through the federal Department of Veterans Affairs.
- The applicant or their spouse is the property owner of record as of January 1 in the year they apply.
- The applicant occupies the property as their primary residence, as of January 1 in the year they apply.
When to Apply
Each year’s application period begins on January 1 and ends July 1.
Applications that are returned to the county assessor’s office by the timely deadline receive full appeal rights if the application is denied.
Applications that are returned between the timely deadline (July 1) and the late deadline (August 1) will not receive appeal rights if the application is denied by the county assessor.
If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, applications that are delivered or postmarked by the next working day will be considered to be filed by the deadline.
Per C.R.S. § 39-1-120 (3) If the date for filing any report, schedule, claim, tax return, statement, remittance, or other document falls upon a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it shall be deemed to have been timely filed if filed on the next business day.
Form to Complete
For the veteran with a disability program there are three separate forms. One is designed for the qualifying veterans, one for the surviving spouses of a veteran who previously received the exemption and passed away, and one for the surviving spouses of deceased veterans who have been granted the “Gold Star” designation by the federal Veterans Affair’s Department.

The application process for a veteran with disability property tax exemption requires that the applicant provides a recent copy of their disability award letter. If there are any changes to your disability status, unemployability status, etc. after you apply, you must supply new documentation to your county assessor within 60 days.
